Okay besties, let’s talk gold — because there’s actually a fresh corporate move worth knowing about.
So here’s the news: Osisko Gold just appointed Cameron Carter as vice president of Construction Operations at Barkerville Gold Mines, its wholly owned subsidiary — effective immediately. His job? Overseeing construction execution that’s already underway at the Cariboo gold project in central British Columbia. He reports directly to Sean Roosen, the company’s chairman and CEO, and he’ll be working alongside JDS Energy & Mining Inc., the project’s principal construction management contractor.
Now, I know a leadership hire can sound like boring boardroom news, but hear me out — this one actually matters if you’re interested in gold stocks.
Think of it like renovating your dream home. You can have the perfect blueprints and the budget nailed down, but if you hire the wrong contractor, everything stalls, costs balloon, and your move-in date slips. Big mining projects work the same way. The Cariboo project is moving from “plans on paper” to “actually building the thing,” and that construction phase is where projects either shine or stumble. Bringing in someone whose whole career is about executing these builds is a very deliberate move.
And Carter’s résumé backs it up. He has more than 18 years of experience in underground mine development, construction, operations, and executive leadership. Over his career, he’s held progressively senior roles in mine engineering, operations management, project delivery, and commercial and business development. He joins from Dumas Mining, where he most recently served as senior vice president, providing executive leadership across the technical and commercial functions of its international underground mining business.
This is why I tell my coaching clients to read the people behind the companies, not just the price charts. When a company is entering its riskiest, most execution-heavy phase, the experience level of who’s running the build tells you a lot about how seriously they’re taking it.
Sean Roosen clearly agrees. In announcing the appointment, he said the company is excited to welcome Carter, noting that he brings a strong technical background and extensive expertise in building large-scale underground mines globally — and that his commitment to safety, building high-performing teams, and operational excellence, together with his disciplined approach to project delivery, will be invaluable as they advance the Cariboo gold project through construction and commissioning and into production.
That word “disciplined” is doing a lot of heavy lifting, friends. Construction and commissioning are where budgets get tested. A leader with a track record of disciplined delivery is exactly what you want to see if you hold — or are considering — exposure to this company.
Here’s what I’d do if I were evaluating this stock: I’d treat this hire as one positive data point in my research, not a buy signal on its own. Carter also helped develop and construct Glencore’s Mine D project at Kidd Operations in Northern Ontario — one of the world’s deepest base metal mining operations — which is serious underground credibility. He holds bachelor’s degrees from Acadia University and Dalhousie University, and he’s a licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario. Credentials + experience + the right timing of the hire? That’s the kind of triple-check I like to see before I get excited about any single company story.
One more thing I love about this: it’s a reminder that gold isn’t just bars in a vault. When you invest in gold stocks, you’re investing in companies — teams, projects, timelines, and the people executing them. Companies like Osisko Gold move from exploration to construction to production, and each phase carries different risks and rewards. Knowing where a company is in that journey is basic financial literacy for any resources investor, and it’s knowledge most people never bother to learn. You, though? You’re not most people. 💛
So whether gold is already part of your portfolio or you’re just gold-curious, let this be your nudge: pick one company story this week — maybe Cariboo — and actually dig into who’s leading it and what stage it’s in. Confidence with money comes from exactly this kind of curiosity.
