Newfoundland and Labrador’s government is courting mining investment with a push to cut red tape, while developers face financing, infrastructure and permitting hurdles that can stall new operations.

Those challenges framed discussions at the Mineral Resources Review 2026 conference in St. John’s, where mining executives, investors and government officials gathered to discuss the province’s mineral potential. A broader provincial consultation on simplifying government processes is open until Nov. 20.

“They’ll tell us exactly what they want,” FireFly Metals CEO Darren Cooke told The Northern Miner at the event, describing cooperation with provincial regulators. “They’ll review some of the work before we formally submit it to give feedback.”

Closer cooperation with regulators could help developers avoid costly delays as countries compete to secure critical minerals supplies. For investors and the businesses supplying equipment and services, the opportunity depends on companies securing the capital and infrastructure needed to turn discoveries into lasting production.
