Sunshine Silver Mining & Refining (NYSE: SSMR) is designing a mill with room to double throughput as it targets a late-2028 restart of Idaho’s Sunshine silver mine, CEO Heather White says.

The operation, near Kellogg and about 430 km north of Boise, would initially process ore at its base-case rate, with capacity for future expansion. Sunshine’s March initial assessment projects average annual production of 6.7 million oz. silver over the first five years. The company expects to complete its mine-and-mill feasibility study in the second quarter of 2027 before making a construction decision.

“Clearly, getting those feasibility studies wrapped up first half of next year, that will position us to look at what remaining capital would be needed to fund us all the way through to production,” White told The Northern Miner late last month in Colorado Springs.

The restart could restore a sizeable source of U.S. silver supply while creating a platform for domestic metals refining. Sunshine is separately studying an antimony plant and the refurbishment of its silver-copper refinery, with both studies due in the first quarter of 2027, White said.
