Invest Like a Pro: Mining’s New Woman Leader Shows How Smart Money Moves Up

6 Min Read

Okay babe, let’s talk about why a CEO change in the mining world actually matters for your money. 💅

So here’s the headline: the International Council on Mining and Metals — ICMM for short — just named Froydis Cameron-Johansson as its next president and CEO. She takes over on Nov. 23, stepping into the role after Rohitesh Dhawan, who’s stepping down after more than five years leading the organization.

Now, I know what you might be thinking: “Jessie, why are we talking about mining executives?” Stay with me, because if you’ve ever bought a gold ETF, owned shares in a mining stock, or wondered where the materials for your EV battery and your iPhone actually come from — this affects the industry you’re investing in.

Here’s who we’re dealing with. Cameron-Johansson comes to ICMM with three decades of senior leadership experience across both the mining and energy sectors. She’s lived and worked in emerging and established markets around the world, and over her career she’s become a major ambassador for the extractives industry — specifically as an advocate for responsible business and sustainability. Translation: this is not someone learning on the job. This is a woman who’s been in the room where it happens for 30 years.

And honestly? I love seeing a woman step into a leadership role at the top of an industry that historically hasn’t exactly been known for its female representation. Representation in finance and industry matters, and it’s a reminder to all of us that those boardroom seats are there for the taking.

The chair of ICMM — Iván Arriagada, who’s also the CEO of Antofagasta — had this to say about the appointment: it’s a pivotal time for the industry, with critical minerals top of the agenda around the world. He called her a leader with the credibility and conviction to make the case for responsibly produced minerals and metals where it matters most, and said her passion for mining, sustainability, and delivery combined with her knowledge and experience made her the outstanding candidate to guide ICMM into its next chapter.

Critical minerals top of the global agenda — let that sink in. Copper, lithium, nickel, gold — these are the raw materials behind the energy transition, the tech boom, and honestly a big chunk of the investment themes my coaching clients ask me about every single week. The person shaping how responsibly these minerals get produced? That’s relevant to your portfolio.

Now, some love for the outgoing CEO. Dhawan has led ICMM since April 2021, and Arriagada thanked him on behalf of the members for his outstanding leadership and the vital role he played in moving the industry toward a more responsible and sustainable future. Under his watch, ICMM positioned itself as the leading voice on responsible mining, and many of the organization’s most significant milestones happened during his five years. He’ll stay in post through the end of the year to make sure the handoff is smooth.

Here’s what I’d do with this information: I wouldn’t panic, and I wouldn’t rush to buy anything based on one leadership announcement. What I would do is take it as a nudge to pay attention to the responsible mining trend. Sustainability standards in mining aren’t just feel-good headlines — they shape which companies win contracts, attract capital, and hold their value long term. When an industry heavyweight like ICMM enters what they’re calling the next phase of its strategy — focused on driving performance against the Consolidated Mining Standard and advocating for responsible production and value chains — the companies that meet those standards are the ones positioned for the long game.

This is why I tell my coaching clients: don’t just invest in a theme, understand the forces shaping it. If critical minerals are top of the world’s agenda — and they are — then knowing who’s setting the standards for how those minerals get produced makes you a smarter investor than 90% of people scrolling stock tips on TikTok.

So here’s your action step this week: if you own any mining or materials exposure, take ten minutes to look up whether the companies in your portfolio talk about responsible sourcing and sustainability standards. It’s the kind of due diligence that separates investing from gambling, and it takes less time than choosing an outfit.

The world runs on metals and minerals, bestie — and now you know who’s helping set the rules for how they’re mined.
