Micas Networks Brings Co-Packaged Optics Switch Production In-House to Ramp Commercial Output
Micas Networks, a US-based AI networking firm, is expanding its company-operated manufacturing footprint to scale production of its co-packaged optics (CPO) switch platform. The move gives the company direct control over clean-room assembly and integration processes at a time when hyperscale AI deployments are straining traditional pluggable optical module supply chains.
According to the announcement, the company’s vertically integrated approach supports one of the industry’s first commercially available CPO switches, which is being offered through server maker Supermicro. By keeping manufacturing in-house rather than relying on outsourced assembly, Micas aims to shorten iteration cycles and improve quality control as volumes grow.
Co-packaged optics moves the optical engine onto the switch package itself, alongside the switching silicon, rather than using front-panel pluggable transceivers. The design can materially reduce power consumption and signal-integrity limits in AI cluster fabrics, where switch-to-switch bandwidth requirements are climbing rapidly. The trade-off is a more complex manufacturing flow, which is why in-house clean-room capability is often cited as a differentiator in this segment.
